1. First things first, tell us a bit about yourself and what your business is.

My name is Brooke Lauffer and I am a calligrapher and artist based in Northern Virginia and the DC Area.  Splotch and Line is a full service artistic service specializing in unique hand lettering and art.  The majority of my work is focused around event design but also includes custom home decor!

2. Where can we find you online?

Although I have a website – www.splotchandline.com, the majority of my work is shared via Instagram @splotchandline.  It is by far my favorite sharing platform!

3. How did you get into what you do creatively?

Starting my company was a gradual process for me.  I have always loved any sort of activity that allowed me use my artistic skill but also thrived when I had to think creatively.  My mom was a huge proponent of doing something creative everyday and my aunt was an incredible artist.  The two of them influenced my love of using up that creativity I had and making beautiful and noteworthy things.  When I had my daughter, I filled her naptime with practicing the art of hand lettering and over the years I have developed a style and grown as an artist and letterer.  It is my absolute favorite thing to do.

4. What’s a recent project you worked on that you just loved?

Recently, I had worked on a styled shoot that included some beautiful gowns from the one and only Anthropologie.  It was one of those moments where I sat back, looked at my work and thought “Wow, things are just really clicking.”  It was probably my best work to date and really showcased my versatility and creativity.  I also painted a large scale photo backdrop with gorgeous, bright colors and it was such a fun project.

5. Where / Who do you gain inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from many places but I would say first and foremost – my mom, who never stops moving and thinking creatively.  I also gain inspriation from fellow letterers.  It never ceases to amaze me how many talented people there are in this world and I’m grateful to be in their company.  Lastly, being outside and getting fresh air always rejuvenates a creative rut for me.  Flowers are a constant source of inspiration.

6. If you had one piece of advice to give, about anything you want, what would it be?

My one piece of advice would be to listen to your heart and keep pushing. For a very long time I felt that I was living only a mediocre version of myself and I knew I was capable of so much more.  I had a bad experience in which I created content for a blog and I was so incredibly excited to see the post only to find that my work was not used.  It made me feel defeated in a way but I used that defeat to become better and improve my skill.  Whatever it is you are dreaming about, just keep pushing despite the defeat.
